The CLA is Mercedes-Benz's four-door coupe, sharing much of its underpinnings and engines with the A-Class while wrapping them in a lower, sportier body. Servicing needs are broadly similar to the A-Class but worth checking against the specific generation.
Generations and body styles
The C117 (2013-2019) was the first CLA, based on the W176 A-Class platform. The C118 (2019 onwards) followed the newer W177-based platform, bringing MBUX infotainment and, on certain petrol variants, mild-hybrid assistance.
Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric
Petrol CLA models have used 1.3 and 2.0-litre turbo engines, while diesel variants have used 1.5 and 2.0-litre four-cylinder units badged 'd'. Some later C118 petrol models added 48V mild-hybrid support on certain engines, affecting stop-start and battery management checks.
What servicing it needs
The CLA follows the same Mercedes-Benz Service A/B flexible schedule as its A-Class relatives, based on mileage and elapsed time rather than a strict annual pattern. Given the CLA's lower ride height, some owners also want suspension and underbody checks as part of a service.
Gearbox
Many CLA models use the 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which Mercedes-Benz specifies a fluid change interval for on many variants. Manual gearboxes were offered on some earlier or lower-spec CLA models.
Timing belt, wet belt or chain
Most CLA petrol and diesel engines use a timing chain rather than a belt, in line with the shared engine range used across A-Class and CLA models of the same generation.
