Generations and body styles
The W221 (2005-2013) and W222 (2013-2020) generations established the modern S-Class formula of six and eight-cylinder engines with air suspension as standard on most versions. Gearbox
The S-Class is almost always fitted with an automatic gearbox, typically 7G-Tronic or 9G-Tronic depending on generation, both of which Mercedes-Benz specifies a fluid change for on many examples. Manual gearboxes are not a consideration on this model.
Timing belt, wet belt or chain
Most S-Class petrol and diesel engines use a timing chain, though on some six and eight-cylinder units, chain and tensioner condition is worth checking as part of a diagnostic assessment on higher-mileage cars.
