Why timing belts are replaced before they fail
The timing belt, often called the cambelt, keeps the valves opening in step with the pistons. It's made of reinforced rubber and wears with age and mileage, often without any warning.
On most modern engines a belt that snaps or jumps teeth lets the valves hit the pistons. That can mean bent valves, a damaged cylinder head or a replacement engine, which is why manufacturers set a replacement interval.

When is it due?
This page is about conventional dry timing belts. If your engine has a belt that runs in oil, see wet belt replacement instead. If it has a metal chain, see timing chain replacement.
Each manufacturer gives an interval in miles and years, whichever comes first. A car that does low mileage still needs a belt on age, because rubber deteriorates over time. If you've bought a used car with no record of a belt change, it's safest to assume it hasn't been done.
What's replaced with the belt
Keeps the belt at the right tension. A worn tensioner can wreck a new belt.
Guide the belt. Worn bearings can seize or make noise.
Where it's driven by the timing belt, it's usually replaced at the same time because the labour overlaps.
Often removed for access, so it's sensible to change it if it's worn.
Warning signs
Can point to a worn tensioner or pulley.
A leaking water pump can contaminate the belt.
May mean the timing has slipped.
The most common reason to replace one.
