Timing chains aren't always for life

Unlike a timing belt or wet belt, which are rubber and replaced at set intervals, a timing chain is metal and is only replaced when it's worn.

A timing chain is a metal chain that does the same job as a timing belt. It's designed to last much longer, and many never need replacing. But chains can stretch, and the plastic guides and tensioners that control them can wear, especially when oil changes have been stretched out or the wrong oil has been used.

Engine repair taking place at our Slough workshop

Symptoms of a worn timing chain

Rattle on cold start

A few seconds of rattling from the engine after starting is a classic sign of a slack chain or tired tensioner.

Engine warning light

Camshaft/crankshaft correlation codes appear when the chain has stretched out of tolerance.

Poor running

Rough idle, hesitation or loss of power can follow when the timing drifts.

Metal in the oil

Fine debris from worn guides or chain links shows up at an oil change.

Diagnosis before replacement

A rattle doesn't always mean the chain, so we check first. We read the fault codes, look at live camshaft timing data and, where it's worth doing, inspect the chain and guides. You get a clear answer and a quote before any work starts.

Why it's a big job

On many engines the chain sits behind the front covers or at the back of the engine against the gearbox, so access can involve a lot of dismantling. That's why we replace the chain, guides, tensioner and seals together. Doing only part of the kit risks paying for the same labour twice.

"Highly recommend this garage. After contacting a few other garages who didn't want to take my car in for diagnostics, these guys were happy to help. They diagnosed and fixed an engine fuel leak issue professionally and efficiently. Great service and very reliable. I'll definitely use them again."

Timing Chain Replacement: common questions

Can I keep driving with a rattling chain?+
It's best not to put it off. If a chain jumps or breaks, the engine can be badly damaged. Get it checked soon.
How long does a timing chain replacement take?+
It depends heavily on the engine. Some are a day's work, others take longer. We'll give you a time with the quote.
Can regular oil changes help?+
Yes. Clean oil of the right specification is the best protection for chains, guides and hydraulic tensioners.
