Signs your air con needs attention
Most often low refrigerant, which escapes slowly over the years.
Bacteria build-up in the system or an old cabin filter.
Air con dries the air, so a weak system shows up in winter too.
Can point to a compressor or clutch problem.

Why air conditioning stops cooling
Car air con is a sealed system, but a small amount of refrigerant escapes through seals and hoses every year. Once the level drops far enough, the system can't cool properly and the compressor may stop engaging. Other causes include a leaking condenser behind the front grille, a failed compressor clutch, a blocked cabin filter or an electrical fault in the fan or pressure sensor.
Air con regas: what's included
We recover any remaining refrigerant, pull the system into a vacuum and check that it holds. That vacuum test tells us whether there's a leak. If it holds, we recharge with the exact amount of refrigerant and compressor oil your car specifies, then check the vent temperature and compressor operation.
If it doesn't hold, we'll trace the leak and quote for the repair before refilling, so you're not paying for gas that escapes again within weeks.
R134a and R1234yf
Used in most cars built before around 2017. Still widely serviced.
The newer refrigerant with a lower environmental impact, used in most recent cars. It needs dedicated equipment and costs more to buy.
Air con servicing and leak diagnosis
Alongside a regas we can replace the cabin (pollen) filter and treat the system for musty smells. Where there's a leak, we check the usual suspects, including condenser, pipes, O-ring seals and the compressor, and show you what we've found before any repair.
When a regas may be needed
If the air feels only slightly cool, takes a long time to cool the cabin or the windows mist up more than they used to, the refrigerant is likely low. Many owners have it checked every two years or so. Running the air con for a few minutes every week, even in winter, helps keep the seals supple.
