The C-Class is one of the most common Mercedes-Benz models on UK roads, spanning saloon, estate and coupe body styles across several generations. Servicing requirements differ depending on the exact generation and engine fitted.
Generations and body styles
The W204 (2007-2014) is a traditional four-cylinder and six-cylinder saloon/estate. The W205 (2014-2021) brought a lighter body and a wider engine range, including four-cylinder petrol and diesel units. The current W206 (2021 onwards) introduced plug-in hybrid variants and a revised electrical architecture with more onboard sensors and driver assistance systems.
Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric
Diesel C-Class models have used a range of four-cylinder engines badged 'd', while petrol variants include four-cylinder turbo units and, on certain W204 models, six-cylinder engines. The W206 generation added plug-in hybrid options on some derivatives, which involve a high-voltage battery and require servicing awareness of that system alongside the conventional engine.
What servicing it needs
As with other Mercedes-Benz models, the C-Class typically follows the Service A/B flexible schedule based on mileage and elapsed time rather than a single fixed yearly interval, tracked by the car's service computer. Brake fluid, cabin filters and various fluid checks are worked into this rotation depending on age and mileage.
Gearbox
Many C-Class models use the 7G-Tronic or 9G-Tronic automatic gearboxes, both of which Mercedes-Benz specifies a fluid change for on many examples rather than describing them as maintenance-free for the car's life. Some manual gearbox variants were offered on earlier W204 models.
Timing belt, wet belt or chain
The majority of C-Class four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines use a timing chain, though chain stretch or tensioner noise can sometimes be picked up during diagnostics on higher-mileage cars, depending on engine code.
