The E-Class covers a wide span of executive saloons and estates, many of which are used for higher-mileage motorway driving. Servicing depends heavily on generation, engine and whether air suspension is fitted.

Generations and body styles

The W212 (2009-2016) is a traditional executive saloon/estate with a broad engine line-up. The W213 (2016-2023) brought a more digital cabin and, on some derivatives, air suspension and additional driver assistance sensors. The newer W214 (2023 onwards) introduced further hybrid options and updated electronics.

Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric

Diesel E-Class models have used four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines depending on year, while petrol variants range from four-cylinder turbo units to six-cylinder engines on higher-spec cars. Certain W213 and W214 derivatives added mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid technology, which brings additional checks around the hybrid battery and electrical system.

What servicing it needs

The E-Class follows the Mercedes-Benz Service A/B flexible schedule on many examples, based on mileage and time rather than a strict annual pattern, tracked via the onboard service computer. High-mileage E-Class cars often need closer attention to oil condition and filters given typical usage patterns.

Gearbox

Automatic E-Class models commonly use 7G-Tronic or 9G-Tronic gearboxes, many of which have a Mercedes-specified fluid change interval rather than being sealed for the car's lifetime. Manual gearboxes have been fitted to some earlier or lower-volume variants.

Timing belt, wet belt or chain

Most E-Class petrol and diesel engines from recent generations use a timing chain rather than a belt, though tensioner or chain wear can occasionally be identified during diagnostic checks on higher-mileage examples.

Other things we check

  • ✓ Air suspension operation on models fitted with it
  • ✓ Automatic gearbox fluid condition where applicable
  • ✓ Diagnostic checks for driver assistance sensor faults
  • ✓ Brake wear given typical motorway-mileage use

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Servicing. FAQs

Does my E-Class have air suspension?+
Air suspension was fitted to certain E-Class derivatives, particularly some W213 and W214 models, rather than across the whole range, so it depends on the specific trim and options fitted.
How often does the E-Class need a service?+
Many E-Class models use the Mercedes-Benz Service A/B flexible schedule, which is worked out from mileage and time since the last service via the car's onboard computer.
Does the E-Class use a timing belt or chain?+
Most current-generation E-Class petrol and diesel engines use a timing chain rather than a belt, though it is worth confirming the exact engine code fitted to your car.
