A cracked diamond cut wheel is a tricky job, and most workshops will only do half of it. They will either weld and leave you to source a re-cut, or refuse the job because they do not have a CNC wheel lathe. At our Slough workshop we do both, in the same building, and that is why diamond cut work makes up a real chunk of what we do every week.
Diamond cut wheels are not painted on the bright face. They are CNC machined to bare aluminium and then sealed under a thin layer of lacquer. Repaint a diamond cut wheel and it looks wrong. Weld it without re-cutting and the weld shows. The only proper fix is weld, dress, re-lathe on the CNC, prime the inner spoke areas in colour, then re-lacquer. We do all of it in Slough.

Why DIY diamond cut repair never works
Buy a diamond cut alloy off Facebook Marketplace that has been touched up with silver paint and clear lacquer in someone's garage and you will see the difference within a week. The colour is wrong, the lacquer flakes off at the edges, and the wheel does not match the other three. There is no shortcut. Diamond cut means CNC machined, and the only way to restore the finish is to put the wheel back on a CNC lathe and cut a fresh face. That requires the right machine, the right tooling, the right operator and the right time. We have all four at our Slough workshop.
We also see wheels that have been welded by general fabricators with no aluminium experience. The weld is porous, the wheel will not pressure test, and the customer has paid for a job that has to be done again properly. Aluminium TIG welding on alloy wheels is its own skill. So is diamond cut re-lathing. Doing them both, on the same wheel, in the same workshop, is what we do.
How the full diamond cut repair runs
Tyre off, wheel washed and dye tested, crack mapped, V-ground out, stop-drilled at each end. Wheel preheated, TIG welded with the correct filler, cooled under a heat blanket, dressed back flush. Pressure tested in the water tank. Then the wheel goes on the CNC lathe, the bright face is skim-cut to remove the old finish and reveal the weld blended in, the inner spoke and pocket areas are sprayed in factory-matched colour, and the whole wheel is clear-coated and oven-cured. TPMS sensor refitted with a new service kit, tyre refitted, balanced, back on the car.
Total turnaround is usually 48 to 72 hours for a single wheel. Multiple wheels in parallel are usually quicker per wheel because the CNC setup happens once. Most diamond cut customers from Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead drop the car in mid-week and pick it up before the weekend.
