The welding process

Prepare

Tyre off, wheel cleaned and the crack traced to its end.

Open up the crack

The crack is ground out into a groove so the weld penetrates fully.

TIG weld

Aluminium filler is laid in with a TIG welder, which gives controlled heat on alloy.

Dress and test

The weld is smoothed to the barrel profile, then the wheel is pressure-tested for leaks.

Alloy wheel work at our Slough workshop

Assessed before welding

We only weld cracks that are safe to repair, so every wheel is assessed first. If a crack isn't suitable for welding, we'll tell you and explain the options.

Why TIG welding

Aluminium alloy conducts heat quickly and doesn't take kindly to rough welding. TIG gives precise control of heat and filler, which is what a clean, sealed barrel repair needs.

Straightening first

A wheel that has cracked has usually been bent as well. Where that's the case we straighten it before welding, so the tyre seals properly and the wheel runs true.

Alloy Wheel Welding: common questions

How long does alloy wheel welding take?+
It depends on the crack and whether the wheel also needs straightening or refinishing. We'll give you a timescale after assessing it.
Do you weld spokes?+
No. Cracks in the spokes or centre mean the wheel should be replaced.
Can I bring just the wheel?+
Yes. You can bring the wheel with the tyre on, or bring the car in.
