How wheels crack

Most cracks start on the inner barrel of the wheel after a hard pothole strike, often on low-profile tyres where there's little rubber to absorb the impact. The first sign is usually a tyre that loses air slowly, or a vibration that wasn't there before.

Wheel assessment at our Slough workshop

Assessing a crack

We remove the tyre and look at where the crack is, how long it is and whether the wheel is also bent. A short crack in the barrel is often repairable. We'll explain what we've found and show you photos before quoting.

When a wheel shouldn't be repaired

Cracks in the spokes or centre

These carry the load of the car, so a repair isn't a safe option.

Cracks near the wheel nut holes

Replacement is the right call.

Multiple or very long cracks

Usually a sign the wheel has taken too much damage.

Previous poor repairs

Old welds that have cracked again may not be worth redoing.

After the repair

Repaired wheels are straightened if needed, pressure-tested, refitted with a new valve and balanced. We'll recommend keeping an eye on tyre pressures for the first few weeks as a sensible precaution.

Cracked Alloy Wheel Repair: common questions

Is it safe to drive on a cracked alloy?+
It isn't advisable. A crack can grow and cause sudden air loss. Fit the spare if you have one and get it checked.
Can every crack be repaired?+
No. Cracks in the spokes, centre or around the wheel nut holes mean the wheel should be replaced.
Will the repair show?+
Most cracks are on the inner barrel, out of sight. If it's visible, it can be refinished afterwards.
