The BMW 4 Series was introduced as a coupe-styled sibling to the 3 Series, later adding Convertible and Gran Coupe body styles. It shares much of its mechanical underpinnings with the 3 Series of the same period, so servicing patterns are similar.
Generations and body styles
The F32/F33/F36 range (2013-2020) covered Coupe, Convertible and four-door Gran Coupe body styles, while the current G22/G23/G26 generation (2020-) continues this spread. Both generations share engines and much running gear with their 3 Series counterparts.
Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric
Four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines have been offered depending on model and year, along with mild-hybrid assistance on more recent cars. The Convertible's folding hardtop roof mechanism is an additional item worth having checked periodically.
What servicing it needs
Servicing follows BMW's condition-based system in most cases, with intervals adjusted for driving style. An annual inspection remains a good idea on older or higher-mileage cars regardless of the on-board reminder.
Gearbox
Manual gearboxes were available on some earlier engines, though automatic transmissions, including BMW's conventional torque-converter automatic, are common across the range. Fluid changes at higher mileage are worth considering even where the transmission is described as sealed for life.
Timing belt, wet belt or chain
Most petrol and diesel engines used in the 4 Series use a timing chain. As with the related 3 Series, chain tensioner wear can occur on certain engines at higher mileages and is worth listening for on startup.
