The BMW 2 Series name actually covers two quite different types of car. The Coupe and Convertible are rear-wheel-drive vehicles closely related to the 1 Series, while the Active Tourer and Gran Tourer are front-wheel-drive MPVs built on a shared platform with the Mini. Knowing which type you have makes a difference to what servicing involves.
Generations and body styles
The F22/F23 Coupe and Convertible (2014-2021) and the newer G42 Coupe (2021-) are rear-wheel drive, with the high-performance M240i using a turbocharged straight-six engine. The F45/F46 Active Tourer and Gran Tourer (2014-2021) and the current U06 Active Tourer are front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, sharing much of their mechanical layout with contemporary Minis.
Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric
Coupe and Convertible models range from four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines up to the turbocharged straight-six in the M240i. Active Tourer models use smaller three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, and plug-in hybrid versions have also been offered depending on year.
What servicing it needs
Servicing is generally governed by BMW's condition-based service system, which varies intervals depending on driving style and conditions rather than a strict fixed schedule. Many owners choose an annual inspection alongside this, particularly for cars doing lower mileages.
Gearbox
Manual and automatic gearboxes are both available depending on model, with the Active Tourer commonly fitted with a dual-clutch or torque-converter automatic depending on year, while the Coupe range includes BMW's own conventional automatic options.
Timing belt, wet belt or chain
Most petrol engines across the 2 Series range use a timing chain, though certain smaller-capacity turbocharged units, particularly those shared with Mini models in the Active Tourer, are worth checking individually as belt-in-oil ('wet belt') designs have been used on some related engines elsewhere in the BMW/Mini range.
