Wet Belt Warning Signs. When to Replace Before Damage

Every week a worried Slough driver calls us about a Ford EcoBoost or PSA PureTech wet belt. Some have read worrying reports and want reassurance. Some have ignored a rattle for months and need an honest answer fast. Both are welcome at our Berkshire workshop. We will inspect the engine, give you a straight answer, and not sell you a job you do not need.

Wet belts are not the apocalypse the internet sometimes suggests, but they are not 'fit and forget' either. The job at our Slough garage starts with a proper inspection, not a sales pitch. Here is what we look for and what should make you book in today rather than next month.

The big six warning signs that mean book in this week

  • Brown sludge on the dipstick or oil filler cap. belt material breaking down into the oil. Do not delay
  • Rattle for 5-15 seconds after a cold start. oil pressure slow to build because the pickup strainer is restricted
  • Oil consumption suddenly worse than normal. even known oil-using engines should not change overnight. Investigate
  • Strong oil smell from the engine bay. front crank seal and breather often start weeping before the belt fails
  • Oil pressure or check engine warning light. stop driving. We will recover from the Slough area if needed
  • Service history shows no wet belt change near the interval. if you have crossed 75-100k with no record, you are overdue

Wet belt intervals by engine, honest version

Ford 1.0 EcoBoost three-cylinder: 100,000 miles or 10 years, earlier if short journeys dominate. Ford 1.5 EcoBoost three-cylinder Dragon: same rule, 100k or 10 years. The older Ford 1.8 TDCi Lynx wet belt was 100k or 10 years but most are well past it now and need urgent attention.

PSA / Stellantis 1.2 PureTech turbo (EB2DT and EB2ADT): 75,000 miles or 6 years, no excuses. Applies across Peugeot 208 to 5008, Citroen C3 to C5 Aircross, DS3 to DS7, post-2019 Vauxhall Corsa F, Astra L, Mokka B, Crossland and Grandland, and Toyota Proace City. The naturally aspirated 1.2 PureTech 75 PS is a chain engine and not affected.

Things that do not mean your wet belt is dying

  • A tappet click that vanishes after a couple of seconds. often a stuck lifter, especially on EcoBoosts that have sat for a week
  • Light steam from the breather on a cold morning. totally normal. Condensation burning off as the engine warms up
  • Manufacturer extending or revising the interval. they have done this several times. Our recommendation above is conservative
  • A friend's car blowing up at 40k. outliers exist, often down to oil neglect or wrong-spec oil. The average car is fine to interval if serviced properly

What a wet belt inspection at our Slough workshop looks like

We do a non-destructive inspection for a fair amount. Car comes in, we check service history, oil condition on the dipstick, listen on cold start, scan for live oil pressure data on supported engines, and check the breather and front of the engine for oil weeps. On Fords we can drop the small inspection cover and visually check the wet belt condition without a full strip-down on most models.

You leave with one of three answers: safe for another year and recheck at next service, overdue but not in distress so book the job in the next few weeks, or do not drive far and book the full job now. No scaremongering, no upselling. The Berkshire workshop that tells you the truth.

Wet Belt Warning Signs. When to Replace Before Damage. Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a wet belt inspection at your Slough garage?+
a fair amount for a proper inspection including a printed report. Refunded against the cost of a wet belt replacement if you go ahead with the job.
Can you tell from outside the engine if the belt is going?+
Often, yes. Oil condition, breather weeps, cold start behaviour and oil pressure data tell us a lot without a strip-down. We will be honest about what we can and cannot see.
Is it worth doing the wet belt early?+
If you plan to keep the car five-plus years, yes, peace of mind is worth it. If you are selling within 12 months, an inspection and honest report can be enough.
What is the worst-case if I ignore it?+
Belt sheds, oil pump fails, engine starves of oil, top end and bottom end damage. A a fair amount wet belt job becomes a a fair amount engine replacement. We see it monthly at our Slough workshop.
Do diesel wet belts have the same problem?+
Ford 1.8 TDCi and 2.0 TDCi wet belts in older Mondeos, Focuses and Galaxies have similar issues. Most are well past interval now and need checking urgently.
Can you do a wet belt while I wait?+
No, it is a full day job in our Slough workshop. Drop in the morning and come back at the end of the day, or wait it out in the on-site lounge with WiFi and coffee.
