GTI models commonly use a 6-speed manual or DSG, while the Golf R's 4Motion drivetrain includes a rear differential/Haldex unit that needs its own fluid checked.
Timing belt, wet belt or chain
Certain 1.6 and 2.0 TDI engines in the Golf range use a timing belt running in an oil bath, often called a wet belt, with a manufacturer-specified interval that should be respected. Many TSI petrol engines, including those in the GTI and Golf R, use a timing chain instead, so the correct approach depends on the exact engine fitted.
