The Defender name covers two very different vehicles: the classic, body-on-frame Defender built until 2016, and the modern L663 Defender launched in 2020. Servicing requirements between the two are substantially different, so it helps to be clear which one you have.

Generations and body styles

The classic Defender (built in various forms up to 2016) uses a simple, mechanically robust design with a separate chassis and, in later years, the Ford-derived Puma diesel engine. The modern L663 Defender (2020 onwards) is a monocoque SUV with Ingenium diesel and petrol engines, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, and considerably more onboard electronics.

Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric

The classic Defender was predominantly diesel, most commonly the 2.2 and 2.4-litre Puma engines in later models. The L663 Defender uses Ingenium four-cylinder and six-cylinder diesel and petrol engines, with mild-hybrid assistance on many variants and a plug-in hybrid (P400e) option on certain derivatives.

What servicing it needs

Classic Defenders are generally serviced on a straightforward mileage or annual basis with an emphasis on checking the chassis, driveline and basic fluids given their age and typical usage. The L663 Defender follows Land Rover's more modern flexible or fixed service schedule depending on model year, with additional checks on its electronics and, where fitted, hybrid system.

Gearbox

Classic Defenders have used manual gearboxes almost exclusively, with straightforward fluid change requirements. The L663 Defender is commonly fitted with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, for which Land Rover specifies a fluid change interval on many examples.

Timing belt, wet belt or chain

The classic Defender's later Puma diesel engine uses a timing belt with its own manufacturer-specified change interval. The L663 Defender uses Ingenium engines, which use a timing chain. Send us your registration or VIN and we can confirm the correct service requirements.

Other things we check

  • ✓ Timing belt condition on the classic Defender's Puma diesel engine
  • ✓ Wet belt condition and change interval on applicable L663 Ingenium diesel engines
  • ✓ Chassis and driveline condition, particularly on classic Defenders
  • ✓ 8-speed automatic gearbox fluid condition on L663 models
