The Mini Countryman is the largest model in the Mini range, offered with the option of ALL4 all-wheel drive alongside front-wheel drive. Its bigger size and extra weight compared with the Cooper hatch bring a few of their own servicing considerations.

Generations and body styles

The R60 (2010-2016) was Mini's first Countryman, followed by the F60 (2017-2023) sharing its platform with the BMW X1 and 2 Series Active Tourer, and the current generation continues this shared architecture, including a fully electric version alongside petrol and plug-in hybrid options.

Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric

Petrol and diesel engines have been fitted across the range, with plug-in hybrid Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 and similar versions offered on the F60, and the current generation adding a fully electric option. Diesel models are less common but do appear, particularly on the R60 and F60.

What servicing it needs

Service intervals generally follow BMW's condition-based servicing system on F60 and current models, adjusting for driving style, while the R60 often follows a more fixed schedule. Given the Countryman's use as a family car, an annual check is worthwhile between services.

Gearbox

Manual gearboxes are available on some models, with automatic options including a conventional or dual-clutch automatic depending on generation and engine. The ALL4 all-wheel-drive system, where fitted, adds a rear differential and additional driveshafts that benefit from occasional inspection.

Timing belt, wet belt or chain

Certain F60-generation petrol engines, shared with related BMW and Mini models, use a belt-in-oil ('wet belt') design, while others use a conventional timing chain, so it's worth confirming the specific engine code. The R60's engines generally use a timing chain.

Other things we check

  • ✓ Confirm whether your engine uses a timing chain or wet belt design
  • ✓ ALL4 all-wheel-drive components where fitted
  • ✓ Diesel particulate filter and EGR system on diesel models
  • ✓ Hybrid battery and electric drive checks on plug-in models
