The Ford Fiesta has been through several generations, from the Mk6/Mk7 shapes of the 2000s and 2010s to the Mk8 sold from 2017 onwards. Servicing needs vary quite a bit depending on the engine fitted, so it helps to know which one is under the bonnet before booking work.

Generations and body styles

Common generations seen in for servicing include the Mk6 (2002-2008), Mk7/Mk7.5 (2008-2017) and Mk8 (2017 onwards). Engine and equipment changes across these generations affect service intervals and parts, so the registration year and engine code both matter.

Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric

Naturally aspirated petrol engines such as the 1.25 and 1.4 Duratec were common on earlier cars, while later Fiestas often use the smaller turbocharged 1.0 EcoBoost, and some markets had 1.5 and 1.6 TDCi diesels. ST models use a higher-output 1.5 or 1.6 EcoBoost/Duratec petrol. Servicing detail depends on which engine is fitted.

What servicing it needs

Typical servicing includes engine oil and filter changes, air and pollen filter replacement, spark plugs on petrol models, and brake fluid renewal at the intervals set out in the service schedule. Diesel models with a diesel particulate filter may need additional attention if short journeys are common.

Gearbox

Most Fiestas use a 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox, with a Powershift dual-clutch automatic offered on some Mk7 and later diesel and petrol variants. The Powershift unit has specific fluid and clutch pack service requirements that differ from a conventional automatic, so it's worth confirming which type is fitted.

Timing belt, wet belt or chain

Some 1.0 EcoBoost Fiestas use a wet timing belt design, which runs in engine oil rather than a chain or a conventional dry belt. Not every 1.0 EcoBoost variant is affected, so it's important to confirm the exact engine code and build date by registration or VIN before assuming a wet belt is fitted. Naturally aspirated petrol and diesel engines typically use a timing chain or a conventional dry belt instead.

Other things we check

  • ✓ Front and rear brake pad and disc wear, especially on higher-mileage cars
  • ✓ Air conditioning performance, particularly before summer
  • ✓ Diagnostic check of the engine management light where fitted
  • ✓ Timing belt/chain identification by engine code before major work

Ford Fiesta Servicing. FAQs

Does my Ford Fiesta have a wet timing belt?+
Only certain 1.0 EcoBoost engines use a wet belt design. This depends on the specific engine code and build date, so we'd confirm this against your registration or VIN before quoting any work.
What gearbox does my Fiesta have?+
Many Fiestas are manual, but some petrol and diesel variants from around 2010 onwards were fitted with the Powershift automatic gearbox, which has its own servicing requirements.
How often does a Fiesta need servicing?+
This depends on the engine, age and how the car is used, but most Fiestas follow either an annual or a mileage-based interval as set out in the service schedule for that model year.
