Failed Your MOT? Common Reasons and What It Costs to Fix

Most MOT failures are not catastrophic. They are small things that should have been spotted at the last service. Here is what fails most and what to do about it.

An MOT fail is annoying but it is rarely the end of the world. The car is driveable to a place of repair, you get a fail certificate that lists the actual reasons, and most of what you see on that sheet is genuinely fixable in a day.

What fails most

  1. Lights and signalling. Blown bulb, cracked lens, washer not reaching the screen. Tiny job, tiny cost.
  2. Suspension. Worn drop links, tired bushes, perished gaiters on a track rod end. Bread and butter independent garage work.
  3. Brakes. Imbalance side to side, low pad material, scored discs. Almost always faster to fix than people think.
  4. Tyres. Below 1.6mm tread, cuts in the sidewall, unusual wear pattern indicating tracking is out.
  5. Emissions. Petrols failing on lambda, diesels failing on smoke. Sometimes a faulty sensor, sometimes a tired catalyst, sometimes a DPF on the way out.

What you should not just leave

Anything categorised as Dangerous on the fail sheet is exactly that. Do not drive the car except to take it directly to a garage for repair. Major brake faults, ball joints with play, structural corrosion close to a mounting point. These are not advisories, they are reasons the car is not roadworthy.

How we handle MOT failures

Bring us the fail sheet from any MOT bay. We read it, ring you back with a fixed price for the work to put it right, do the job, and book the car back in for a free retest at the same partner bay. That second test is the bit most garages quietly forget to mention.

Costs vary, and we will not invent a number

A bulb is a few quid. A pair of drop links is an hour of labour and the parts. A pair of rear discs and pads on a small hatchback is one figure, the same on a Range Rover is a very different figure. Anyone who quotes you a price for an MOT repair without seeing the car and the fail sheet is guessing.

Send us a photo of the fail sheet on WhatsApp and we will give you a real quote and a timescale. If we have a slot, we can take the car in soon, fix what failed, retest, and have you back on the road.
